WHAT IS PINLOCK?

Are you tired of your helmet's visor fogging up, especially in the winter season, due to low temperatures?

The Pinlock is ideal so this does not happen. It is a lens that is installed inside the visor and prevents fogging thanks to the air chamber that is created between it and the inside of the helmet. It is made of a plastic material, mostly flexible and transparent, with silicone edges for better fixation.

Now there are many helmets already have an anti-fog system, while others have the option of installing it separately. For this reason it is important to look at the characteristics of the helmet before buying it.

There are other solutions to remove the mist that forms on our visors, such as, for example, raising the visor of the helmet. It is not a highly recommended solution because it is somewhat uncomfortable, especially on rainy and cold days. Also, there are products such as sprays, gels or wipes, which can be a temporary solution to the problem.

How do you install a Pinlock?

If the visor of the helmet already has the pins incorporated to place the Pinlock, the process is very easy. In the case that it does not take them, we always have the option of placing a universal Pinlock (compatible with different types of helmets), although this is not so aesthetic, since it is glued directly to the visor by means of an adhesive glue that incorporates the same sheet. Also you can do the holes yourself with the help of a drill. For this process you must be very careful and precise not to break or scratch the visor, depending on the brand of the helmet, one visor can cost between € 25 to € 90. In addition, if we do not do it correctly, the visor may rub when opened or stop when closed.

Steps to install the Pinlock:

- The first step is to carefully remove the visor from the helmet and leave it in a clean and soft place. We recommend wearing gloves to avoid damaging it and, above all, staining it.

- For helmets with pre-installation on the visor (normally indicated as “Pinlock Ready” or “Pinlock prepared”), no tools are needed, just fix the Pinlock lens on the pins inside of the visor and finish applying light pressure on the silicone strip, so the lens is well adhered to the helmet visor.

Another issue to consider is cleaning the Pinlock.

They are very delicate pieces and scratch very easily. In addition, we must also be careful with the products we use to clean it because it can have the opposite effect and make it dirtier.

Our recommendation is to use water and let it dry in the open air. Later, when we reinstall the Pinlock, we must not forget to clean the visor of the helmet before doing it.

In summary, currently, there are already several brands of motorcycle helmets incorporating or preparing the visor to install the Pinlock anti-fog lens, so, if your helmet does not have it or it is a slightly old or basic range model, We would advise you that before trying to do the holes and installation yourself, study the option of updating your helmet, with the prepared visor for the effective Pinlock lens.

In a next post we will explain the different existing Pinlock models and the difference between them.
