WHAT AGE CAN YOU RIDE WITH YOUR CHILD ON A MOTORCYCLE?

In 2019, the Spanish Alliance for Child Road Safety and the International Union for the Defense of Motorcyclists drew up a decalogue with tips for minors to travel safely by motorcycle. This is precisely the objective of this document, to prevent road risks and to raise awareness about the importance of making travel safe for passengers on the motorcycle.

The regulations allow children from the age of 12 to be carried on scooters and motorcycles. Exceptionally, from the age of 7, they can also go up as long as they are accompanied by their father, mother or an authorized adult.

What must be taken into account according to the decalogue we were talking about?

- HELMET: All children traveling on a motorcycle or scooter must wear an approved helmet, adapted to their size.

- ROAD: For intercity trips, where speeds are higher, you will not be able to travel with children under 12 years of age, at any time.

- PROTECTION: Children must be protected with all the equipment. Jacket with protectors, gloves, pants and boots. If you do not have technical equipment, it is recommended to wear long pants, high shoes, motorcycle gloves, knee pads and “bib” type protectors, which are cheaper and easily adapted.

- BACKPACKS: At no time should they carry a backpack during the journey because it can destabilize them.

- GRIP: The child must hold on to the driver. The grips that motorcycles incorporate on the sides can be dangerous for children.

In addition, it should not be forgotten that the safety of the minor is the responsibility of the driver, at all times. For this reason, it is important to respect safety regulations, drive in a calm and relaxed manner and adjust your speed to the traffic circumstances.

Enjoy the motorcycle together with your child!
